Jessamine County, located in the heart of Kentucky, was founded in 1798 and named in honor of Jessamine Douglass, the daughter of a prominent local family. Its county seat is Nicholasville, which was incorporated in 1837. The county is part of the Bluegrass Region, famous for its fertile limestone soil and thriving agriculture, especially horse farming.

One of the earliest settlements in the area was in 1779, when people, attracted by the fertile land, began to arrive. Kentucky was initially part of Virginia and became a separate state in 1792. Jessamine County itself was formed from a portion of Fayette County.

The county has a rich history steeped in the traditions of horse farming, tobacco growing, and distilling. It has also been known for its abundant limestone quarries that have contributed to the area's development. During the 19th century, Jessamine County was a hub for railway transportation, including the Lexington and Ohio Railroad, which connected Nicholasville and Lexington to other major cities.

One fun fact about Jessamine County is the presence of the Camp Nelson National Monument, which was designated by President Donald Trump in 2018. Camp Nelson served as a critical Union supply depot and training center during the Civil War, as well as a refuge for African American slaves called "contrabands" who sought protection and freedom. The site was an important recruitment and emancipation center for African Americans, with thousands of them becoming soldiers in the United States Colored Troops. Today, Camp Nelson offers an opportunity to explore the county's significant history through exhibits, programs, and events.
