Mason County, located in the northeastern corner of Kentucky, was formed on May 1, 1789, from a portion of Bourbon County. It was the 15th county to be formed in the state and was named in honor of George Mason, a prominent Virginia statesman and author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. The county seat, Maysville, was named after Colonel John May, who was instrumental in the area's early development.

Mason County has a rich history that dates back to the early days of the United States. As early as the 1740s, British and French explorers traveled through the land along the Ohio River. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the area that is now Mason County was the center of the Kentucky tobacco industry, and river transport was vital for the region's growth. The county flourished as a commercial hub during the steamboat era, and Maysville was one of the most prominent ports along the Ohio River.

One fun fact about Mason County is that it is the site of the famous Washington Opera House in Maysville. Built in 1898, the Opera House still stands today with its original Victorian architecture and serves as the community's performing arts center. Remarkably, the Washington Opera House is one of the oldest standing buildings of its type in Kentucky, providing the county with a sense of cultural pride and heritage.
