Nelson County, situated in the heart of Kentucky, is rich in history and culture. Established on January 29, 1785, the county was named in honor of Thomas Nelson Jr., an early American statesman known for his significant contributions during the American Revolution, including the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Nelson County originally consisted of parts of Jefferson and Mercer Counties and underwent a series of land divisions over time, creating new counties such as Washington, Hardin, and Bullitt. The county seat, Bardstown, was laid out in 1788 and is considered one of the oldest settlements in the state, boasting a heavy influence from European settlers, specifically in its architecture.

Bardstown played a crucial role during the American Civil War, where the 1862 Battle of Bardstown took place. An early railroad route called the Bardstown and Louisville Railroad also once passed through the county during the 19th century.

Agriculture, primarily focused on corn, has been an essential aspect of Nelson County's economy. The area is also famously known for its part in the bourbon industry, with several renowned distilleries originating in the county. The Bourbon Capital of the World, Bardstown, is home to the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, which attracts visitors from around the globe annually.

A fun fact about this region is that Nelson County hosts the Carmelite monks, who established the first American foundation of their order in Gethsemani in 1848. The Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani, located in Trappist, Kentucky, became the spiritual home of the famous Trappist monk and author, Thomas Merton.
