Owen County is located in the northern part of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Established on February 6, 1819, the county was formed out of portions of surrounding counties Scott, Franklin, Gallatin, and Pendleton. It was named in honor of Colonel Abraham Owen, a pioneer and military leader who participated in the Battle of Tippecanoe and perished in the Battle of Frenchtown in Michigan in 1813.

The county seat, Owenton, was founded in 1822 and became the center of trade and government for the county. Agriculture has always been the primary economic activity in the region, with tobacco, corn, and wheat being the main crops along with cattle and hog farming. The topography consists of rolling hills and fertile land, making it ideal for farming.

The construction of the Louisville and Nashville (L&N) Railroad in 1871 through Owen County led to an increase in business and town settlements along the tracks, including the towns of Owenton, Long Ridge, Gratz, Monterey, and New Columbus.

One fun fact about Owen County is its connection to the bottled soft drink industry. In 1926, a local pharmacist named Cleo Mingua created a soft drink called "Aerated Health Water," which became popular in the region. This soft drink eventually evolved into Ale-8-One, a ginger-infused soda that is still produced and popular in Kentucky today.
