East Baton Rouge Parish, located in the southeastern part of Louisiana, is the most populous parish in the state. Established in 1810, the parish was created when the Louisiana State Legislature formed the Baton Rouge Parish and the state was divided into 19 parishes. Baton Rouge, the capital city of Louisiana, is centrally located within East Baton Rouge Parish, and it was founded in the early 1700s by French explorers.

The name "Baton Rouge" means "red stick" in French, which is believed to have originated from the Native American tribes in the area who marked their hunting boundaries with red-colored cypress sticks. The region underwent several regime changes during its history, including French, British, and Spanish control before ultimately becoming a part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.

East Baton Rouge Parish played a crucial role during the American Civil War. Baton Rouge was occupied by Union troops in 1862, and several battles were fought in the vicinity, with the most notable one being the Battle of Baton Rouge.

Over time, the parish has become an economic and cultural center for Louisiana, boasting some top-ranked educational institutions, such as Louisiana State University and Southern University. It is also home to several prominent landmarks and sites, including the Louisiana State Capitol, the Old State Capitol, and the Baton Rouge River Center.

A fun fact about East Baton Rouge Parish is that it is home to the country's tallest state capitol building, the Louisiana State Capitol, standing at 450 feet tall with 34 stories. It was constructed during the tenure of the infamous Governor Huey P. Long, who was assassinated in the building in 1935.
