Iberia Parish is located in the heart of the Cajun Coast in the great state of Louisiana. Established on October 30, 1868, the parish was carved out of the neighboring St. Martin and St. Mary Parishes. The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes like the Atakapa and Chitimacha, followed by the French and Spanish settlers in the early 18th century.

The parish is named after the Iberian Peninsula in southern Europe, which includes Spain and Portugal, due to the strong cultural influence these countries had on Louisiana during its colonial era. New Iberia, the largest city and the parish seat, was founded in 1779 by a group of Spaniards who named it Nueva Iberia, after the Iberian connection. Today, New Iberia is a hub for cultural, agricultural, and industrial activities.

A fun fact about Iberia Parish is that it is home to the Shadows-on-the-Teche plantation, a National Historic Landmark built in 1834. The plantation, known for its beautifully landscaped gardens, offers a glimpse into the lives of five different generations of the Weeks family who resided there from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century.
