Madison Parish is located in the northeastern part of the state of Louisiana and was established on December 14, 1839. It was formed from parts of adjacent parishes, specifically Concordia and Ouachita Parishes. The parish is named after former US President James Madison.

The parish has a rich history dating back to its early European settlement in the 18th century. In the 1720s and 1730s, a number of French settlers established homes in the region, which was then part of the French colony called La Louisiane (Louisiana). Subsequently, the colony became part of the Spanish Louisiana Territory following the secret Treaty of Fontainebleau in 1762. In 1800, the territory once again reverted to French control briefly before the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, when the United States acquired the region.

Madison Parish played a significant role during the American Civil War. In 1863, it was the site of the Battle of Milliken's Bend, a battle fought between Confederate soldiers and a Union force composed mostly of African American troops. The Union, despite being poorly equipped, successfully defended the town of Milliken's Bend and its important supply route.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the economy of Madison Parish relied mostly on cotton and timber production. Agriculture remains an integral part of the local economy, with farming activities also focusing on soybeans, corn, and pecans.

As for a fun fact, Madison Parish is the birthplace of iconic American author and humorist Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. He was born near the town of Waterproof in Madison Parish in 1835.

Today, Madison Parish offers a variety of attractions for locals and tourists alike, including its rich Civil War history, outdoor activities, and a glimpse into the past through its historic sites and landmarks.
