Ouachita Parish, located in the northern part of Louisiana, was established on March 31, 1807. Its name derives from the Ouachita River, which runs through the area. The word "Ouachita" is of Native American origin, believed to come from the Choctaw words "owa" (meaning hunt) and "chito" (meaning big), likely referring to big hunting grounds in the region. The parish seat is Monroe, which was founded in 1785 by Don Juan Filhiol as Fort Miro, later renamed for the fifth U.S. President, James Monroe.

Originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, the Ouachita Parish area was impacted by European and American settlers in the 18th and 19th centuries. The arrival of steamboats led to the growth of Monroe as an important trading center in the 1830s. An important turning point came during the American Civil War, where the parish was a significant location for battles in 1862 and 1863. The Civil War affected the entire region's economy, and later, the growth of the railroad system provided new opportunities for the revitalization of Ouachita Parish.

Throughout the 20th century, Ouachita Parish further developed with the expansion of various industries such as timber, agriculture, and manufacturing. The introduction of Interstate 20 facilitated transportation and commerce, bolstering the overall growth of the region. Today, Ouachita Parish has a diverse economy and is home to approximately 153,000 residents.

One fun fact about Ouachita Parish is that it is home to the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens in Monroe, which houses a unique collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia. This attraction is a must-see, as the Biedenharn family played a significant role in the early bottling of Coca-Cola, with Joseph Biedenharn being the first person to ever bottle the beverage in 1894.
