Vermilion Parish, located in the southwestern part of the state of Louisiana, was founded on March 25, 1844. It was formed from parts of Lafayette and St. Martin parishes and named for the abundant vermilion-colored resources found in the bayous named Vermilion River and Bayou Vermilion, after a red pigment widely used by the indigenous Attakapas tribe in the area. The Vermilion Parish seat is Abbeville.

Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, the area was later colonized by French settlers in the 18th century, followed by the Spanish and British. Many of the French settlers were of Acadian descent, coming from eastern Canada and northeastern United States after being forcibly expelled by the British government during the Great Expulsion of 1755-1764. These Acadian settlers were the primary ancestors of today's local Cajun population.

Vermilion Parish has a rich cultural history that is a blend of Native American, African American, Cajun, and Spanish influences, which is still evident today in its cuisine, music, and local customs. The economy of Vermilion Parish has been historically related to agriculture, with rice and sugarcane being important crops, as well as fishing, shrimping, and oil and gas industries.

One fun fact about Vermilion Parish is that it is home to the annual Giant Omelette Celebration held in Abbeville. This event, inspired by a similar tradition in France, involves local chefs working together to cook a massive omelette, which has grown to include over 5,000 eggs and dozens of other ingredients. The omelette is shared among members of the community after it is prepared to symbolize the unity and cooperation among the diverse cultures found in the region.
