The official Maryland motto is "Fatti Maschii, Parole Femine," which is Italian for "Strong Deeds, Gentle Words." It is thought to have been chosen by George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, in the 1600s. The motto was intended to convey the idea of strength and courage in action, tempered by kindness and gentleness of speech. It has been the official motto of the state of Maryland since the mid-1800s.
