York County is located in the southwestern part of the state of Maine, along the Atlantic Ocean. Established in 1636 as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, it originally comprised the southernmost settlements known as Gorgeana, later renamed York. York County is the oldest county in Maine and the second oldest in the United States, with its history tracing back to the early 17th century.

The county was officially incorporated on May 10, 1652, when Thomas Gorges, an agent of Sir Ferdinando Gorges, received a royal grant from the King of England. When Maine became a state in 1820, York County remained one of the nine original counties.

Throughout its history, York County has primarily relied on a combination of fishing, shipbuilding, and lumber industries. With the growth of the railroad in the mid-19th century, the county experienced a boom in tourism as visitors flocked to the beautiful coastal towns, such as Ogunquit and Kennebunkport. Over time, these towns have become popular vacation and tourist destinations.

One fun fact about York County is that it is home to the famous Nubble Lighthouse, also known as the Cape Neddick Lighthouse, situated on a small island off the coast of Cape Neddick. This iconic lighthouse, built in 1879, is a historic landmark and is considered one of the most photographed lighthouses in the United States.
