Crawford County is located in the northeastern part of the Lower Peninsula of the great state of Michigan. Established in 1840, it was initially named Shawono County after the Shawnee Indians, who lived in the region. However, in 1843, it was renamed to honor Col. William Crawford, a Revolutionary War hero, who also served as a surveyor and soldier during the Indian Wars in the Ohio Territory.

Before European settlement, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, mainly the Ojibwe. The first European settlers arrived in the late 19th century, drawn by the abundant timber resources. The logging industry quickly developed and consumed most of the region's white pine forests by the early 1900s. With the decline of the logging industry, the economy shifted to other industries such as agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing.

The county seat of Crawford County is Grayling, which is located near the Au Sable River, a prominent water source famous for its clear, cold waters and excellent trout fishing opportunities. The river has played an essential role in the development and history of the county, largely contributing to the growth of the local lumber and tourism industries.

A fun fact about Crawford County is that it is home to the beautiful Hartwick Pines State Park, one of the largest state parks in Michigan. Spanning over 9,672 acres, the park has several unique features including the "Old Growth Forest" a 49-acre section of virgin white pine trees, some of which are estimated to be around 400 years old. Today, the state park is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts who come to enjoy activities such as hiking, camping, birdwatching, and exploring the park's rich ecosystem.
