Mason County is located in the western region of Michigan's Lower Peninsula and has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century. Established on January 2, 1855, it was named after the Michigan statesman Stevens T. Mason, who served as the state's first governor. The county seat is Ludington, well known for its picturesque landscapes and historic downtown area.

Before European settlers arrived in the area, it was home to Native American tribes, such as the Ottawa and Chippewa, who used the land for hunting, fishing, and trade. Mason County first began to be populated by European settlers during the 1840s as a result of the burgeoning lumber industry. The abundance of timber in the region attracted entrepreneurs, who built sawmills, and the county experienced rapid development and growth.

In the following decades, the lumber industry continued to thrive, and other industries such as farming and fishing were also established, contributing to the county's economic development. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century greatly improved transportation and connections with other parts of the state, driving further industrial and population growth in Mason County.

Today, Mason County has transformed significantly from its early lumbering days, with a focus on tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing. It offers numerous recreational activities, including water sports, hiking, and golf. The county also boasts an array of festivals and events throughout the year, celebrating its rich cultural heritage and community spirit.

Fun fact: One of Mason County's unique attractions is the Ludington North Breakwater Light, a historic lighthouse built in 1924. It stands at the end of a half-mile pier in Lake Michigan and is open for tours during the summer months. Climbing its tower offers visitors beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding area, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
