Tuscola County is located in the eastern-central region of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Established on April 1, 1840, it was originally part of Sanilac and Huron counties. The county was named after a Native American word that roughly translates to "flat land" or "plains". Caro, the largest city in Tuscola County, was selected as the county seat in 1868.

The early history of Tuscola County was marked by the lumber industry, as vast tracts of timber attracted settlers and entrepreneurs. The Cass River, which runs through the county, played a crucial role in the transportation of timber to mills located downstream. As the timber resources waned by the late 19th century, the region shifted its attention to agriculture. The county's fertile lands and the availability of water sources supported various crops and dairy farming, shaping its agricultural profile.

Today, Tuscola County is known for its agrarian landscape, quaint towns, and recreational opportunities. Caro is a bustling city with historical buildings, festivities, and museums, such as the Thumb Octagon Barn Agricultural Museum, which showcases the region's agricultural history. The county is also home to several parks and wildlife areas, providing ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.

Fun Fact: Tuscola County is known for one of Michigan's most unique structures, the "Thumb Octagon Barn." Constructed in 1924 by James Purdy, the barn is a massive octagonal-shaped building that was employed to house livestock and store hay. The barn has since been restored and is now a popular tourist destination, hosting fairs and events throughout the year.
