Wexford County is located in the northwestern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The county was officially organized in 1869, and it was named after Wexford County in Ireland. It covers an area of approximately 576 square miles and has the city of Cadillac as its county seat.

Before European settlement, Native American tribes, such as the Ottawa and Ojibwe, inhabited the region. The first European settlers in the area were trappers and lumbermen, who began to exploit the region's abundant pine and hardwood forests for lumber during the 19th century. As the lumber industry expanded, so did the population, and several towns and villages were established, including Cadillac, Manton, and Harrietta.

The development of the railroads in the late 19th century further contributed to the growth of Wexford County. They provided an essential means of transportation for the timber, as well as linking the area to larger cities in Michigan and the Midwest.

As the county's lumber industry dwindled in the early 20th century, the focus shifted towards agriculture and outdoor recreation. Wexford County's abundance of lakes, rivers, and woodlands made it a destination for fishing, hunting, camping, and boating.

Wexford County is now well known for its scenic beauty and vast recreational opportunities, including its proximity to the Traverse City area and its role as the gateway to the Manistee National Forest to the west.

Fun fact: Wexford County is home to the Mitchell State Park, which sits between two picturesque lakes, Cadillac Lake and Mitchell Lake. This beautiful, forested park offers year-round recreational activities, such as fishing, swimming, boating, camping, and snowmobiling in winter.
