Clay County is a county located in the northwestern part of the great state of Minnesota. Established on March 8, 1862, and named after US statesman Henry Clay, Clay County played a key role in the region's agricultural development. The county's seat is Moorhead, which also serves as the largest city in the area.

Though initially inhabited by Native American tribes, later on, fur traders and European settlers, primarily Norwegians, began to establish their homes in the region in the mid-to-late 1800s. The rich fertile soil of the Red River Valley, and the establishment of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the 1870s, further boosted the development and expansion of the agriculture-based economy in Clay County.

One fun fact about Clay County, Minnesota, is that it is home to the Hjemkomst Center, which showcases a replica of a historical Viking ship. The ship, named Hjemkomst (meaning 'homecoming' in Norwegian), was constructed by local teacher Robert Asp and successfully sailed to Norway in 1982, symbolizing the region's strong Scandinavian roots. Apart from the Viking ship, the Hjemkomst center also showcases the Hopperstad Stave Church Replica, a full-scale replica of an ancient stave church found in Norway, reflecting the county's rich Norwegian heritage.
