Cook County is a scenic area located in the northeastern corner of Minnesota, bordering Lake Superior, one of the Great Lakes of North America. The county is named in honor of Major Michael Cook, a prominent military officer and later a member of the Minnesota territorial legislature. Established on March 9, 1855, when Minnesota was still a territory, Cook County was officially organized on February 20, 1874.

Before the arrival of European settlers in the 19th century, the region was inhabited by the Ojibwe (Chippewa) tribe. The Ojibwe primarily lived off of farming, hunting, and fishing, and had a deep connection to the land.

The development of Cook County was heavily influenced by the fur trade in the early 1800s, as European settlers established trading posts and forts. The natural resources attracted various industries to the region, including logging, mining, and commercial fishing in the 1800s and early 1900s. Tourism became a significant part of the local economy in the 20th century, thanks to the region's beautiful landscapes and recreational opportunities.

One fun fact about Cook County is that it's home to the breathtaking Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), a one-million-acre network of lakes and wilderness that's popular for canoeing, camping, and fishing. The BWCAW was established in 1964 and is part of the Superior National Forest. It is one of the most visited wilderness areas in the United States, attracting over 150,000 visitors every year.
