Kanabec County, located in the great state of Minnesota, was established on March 13, 1858, and officially organized on May 23, 1882. Situated in the east-central part of the state, the county's name derives from a Dakota word that translates to "snake" and was originally given to the Snake River, which meanders through the county. Mora, the county's largest city, serves as the county seat. The county spans 533 square miles in area, with much of its terrain made up of wetlands, lakes, and forests.

Kanabec County's economy has historically revolved around agriculture, specifically grazing and dairy farming. The area's logging industry emerged in the late 19th century and remained prevalent until the early 20th century. The vast forests in the region made logging a natural resource to capitalize on. Ojibwe and Dakota people were the original inhabitants of the area, who later made treaties with European settlers.

A fun fact about Kanabec County is that every year it hosts the Vasaloppet USA, a cross-country ski race in Mora. This event, usually held in February, is the largest and oldest cross-country ski race in the region, drawing participants from around the world. It was inspired by the original Vasaloppet race held in Sweden, which began in 1922.
