Yellow Medicine County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Minnesota. It was established on March 6, 1871, and was officially organized on August 15, 1871. The county was named after the Yellow Medicine River, which itself was named for a yellow-flowering plant found in the region, scientifically known as Verbascum thapsus, and colloquially referred to as "yellow mullein." This plant was traditionally used by the local Native American tribes, specifically the Dakota people, for its medicinal properties.

The land was initially inhabited by the Dakota tribe and later by European settlers in the mid-1800s. The county played a role in the Great Sioux Uprising, also known as the Dakota War of 1862, which was an armed conflict between the United States and several Dakota tribes.

Granite Falls, the county seat, was one of the earlier settlements in the area, established in 1870 at the junction of the Minnesota River and Yellow Medicine River. Agriculture has historically been the primary economic driver in the county, with a focus on corn, soybean, and livestock production.

A fun fact about Yellow Medicine County is that it is home to the Upper Sioux Agency State Park, which includes a national historic site, the Upper Sioux Agency, established in 1854. The park offers visitors the opportunity to explore the region's natural beauty and learn about its Native American history through various activities and interpretive programs.
