Benton County is located in the west-central region of Missouri. Established on January 3, 1835, it was named after Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton, a prominent advocate for westward expansion in the United States. The county seat is the city of Warsaw, which was incorporated in 1843. Prior to European settlement, the region was inhabited by various Native American tribes, notably the Osage Nation.

During the mid-19th century, Benton County played a role in the growth of the United States, as its waterways and strategic location made it an essential part of westward expansion. The county is adjacent to the Osage River and close to the Harry S. Truman Reservoir - factors that have significantly contributed to the development of the region economically and socially.

Throughout its history, agriculture has played a major role in Benton County's economy. The fertile land and numerous water resources have supported the cultivation of crops and livestock, shaping the county's rural landscape.

One fun fact about Benton County is that it is home to the Lost Valley Fish Hatchery in Warsaw, which is the largest, most modern fish hatchery facility in the state of Missouri. It was opened in 2001 and has 74 hatchery ponds, spanning over 200 acres. The hatchery produces millions of fish annually, contributing to fish stocking programs and boosting recreational fishing opportunities throughout the state.
