Cooper County, located in the great state of Missouri, was established on December 17, 1818, and named after Sarshall Cooper, an early settler in the region. The county is situated in central Missouri, covering an area of approximately 569 square miles. Boonville, the county seat, was founded in 1810 by Hannah and George Boone, relatives of the famous American pioneer Daniel Boone. Cooper County lies along the Missouri River, which has historically played a significant role in its development, economic growth, and transportation.

During the early 19th century, Cooper County saw rapid expansion, as the Santa Fe Trail and the Missouri River facilitated commerce and migration to the western United States. The county was involved in the American Civil War, and the Battle of Boonville took place on June 17, 1861. This early confrontation between the Union and Confederate forces resulted in a Union victory, with significant strategic implications for the rest of the war.

A fun fact about Cooper County is that it is home to Kemper Military School, which was founded in 1844 as the Boonville Male and Female Academy. The school transformed into a military academy in 1885 and was in operation until its closure in 2002. Kemper Military School was the oldest military preparatory school west of the Mississippi River and among the oldest in the United States, with notable former students, including Congressmen, judges, and renowned military figures.
