DeKalb County is a county located in the northwest portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. Created on February 25, 1845, it was named in honor of Revolutionary War hero Johann de Kalb, a German baron who fought for American independence. The county seat and largest city in DeKalb County is Maysville.

In the mid-19th century, DeKalb County was primarily an agricultural area that attracted European immigrants looking to build a new life in America. The first settlers, mainly Scotch-Irish, began arriving in the region in the 1830s, and by the time DeKalb County was officially established, the population had grown significantly. The Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad played a pivotal role in the county's development in the 1800s. It was the first railroad to cross Missouri and connected Hannibal, a city on the Mississippi River, to St. Joseph, a city on the Missouri River.

Throughout its history, DeKalb County has remained a primarily rural area, with agriculture being the backbone of its economy. The county is known for its fertile soil, and crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat are the leading sources of income for local farmers.

Fun Fact: DeKalb County is home to one of the world's largest pecan nurseries, which attracts customers and collectors from all around the globe.
