McDonald County, located in the southwestern region of the great state of Missouri, was officially established on March 3, 1849. The county was named in honor of Sergeant Alexander McDonald, a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. It covers an area of approximately 540 square miles and is bordered by Benton County in Arkansas and Delaware and Newton counties in Missouri.

The first settlers in the region arrived in the early 1800s, attracted by the area's natural resources, such as the Indian and Elk rivers. The county's economy was primarily agricultural in its early days, with many farmers engaged in cattle production and crop cultivation.

One of the major events in McDonald County's history was the Battle of Pineville during the Civil War. On October 16, 1864, a Confederate force led by General Joseph O. Shelby attacked the Union garrison stationed in Pineville, eventually forcing the Union troops to retreat. The restored Old Courthouse and the nearby Jesse James Cave in Pineville bear witness to the events and stories associated with the Civil War era in the county.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the county saw significant growth with the arrival of the railroad, which connected it to major cities like St. Louis, Kansas City, and New Orleans. This improved infrastructure facilitated the transport of goods and people, further boosting the local economy.

Today, the county is known for its scenic beauty, including the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, which offer outdoor recreational activities like canoeing, fishing, and camping. McDonald County's natural beauty and rich history attract visitors year-round.

Fun fact: McDonald County was once involved in a brief "secession" from the United States. In 1961, county residents, frustrated with the omission of the county in the Missouri state road map, humorously seceded from Missouri and the United States, creating the fictional "McDonald Territory." This playful protest led to the revision of Missouri's road map, and McDonald County was added back to the United States.
