Mississippi County, located in the southeastern region of the great state of Missouri, was officially established on February 14, 1845. It was named after the mighty Mississippi River, which forms the eastern boundary of the county. The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Mississippian culture, followed by the Illini and Osage. European exploration of the area began with French explorers in the late 17th century, and the region was eventually part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

The county seat, Charleston, was founded by Col. George Smith in 1837. Charleston is historically significant as it served as a major transportation and trade hub due to its strategic location at the intersection of the Mississippi River and several major railroads. Over the years, Mississippi County has been primarily involved in agricultural production, particularly cotton cultivation. However, the mid-20th century saw a shift to a more diverse economy that included manufacturing and commerce.

A fun fact about Mississippi County is the annual Dogwood-Azalea Festival, which takes place in Charleston. The festival started in 1968 and has become a cherished tradition for both residents and visitors. It celebrates the beautiful blooms of dogwood and azalea flowers that adorn the streets of the city during the spring season, and features various events, including a parade, arts and crafts, and a 5K run.
