Moniteau County, located in the great state of Missouri, was established on February 14, 1845. It was named after the Moniteau Creek, which derives its name from the Native American word "Manitou," meaning "Spirit of the Waters." The county is situated in the central part of Missouri, covering an area of 419 square miles.

Before European settlement, the region was primarily inhabited by the Osage Native American tribe. As westward expansion grew, the area was acquired by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Settlers, mainly of European descent, began to arrive in what is now Moniteau County during the early 1800s, with the majority of the population being of German and Scots-Irish heritage.

The county seat and largest city is California, which was established in 1846. Throughout its history, Moniteau County has been predominantly rural and agricultural, with its economy revolving around livestock farming, crop cultivation, and various agricultural industries. The region played a significant role in the development of Missouri's wine industry in the 19th century until Prohibition halted its growth.

One fun fact about Moniteau County is that it is home to the Burgers' Smokehouse, a family-owned business founded in 1927. The smokehouse is famous for its cured hams and other smoked meats, making it a beloved local institution and a popular destination for both tourists and food enthusiasts.
