Reynolds County is located in the southeast region of the great state of Missouri, and its county seat is Centerville. Established on February 25, 1845, the county was named after Governor Thomas Reynolds, who served from 1840 to 1844. Reynolds County is part of the Missouri Lead Belt, an extensive mining region in the state. During the early days, it was known for its abundant natural resources, such as iron ore and timber, which contributed significantly to the county's economy.

Reynolds County's first European settlers are believed to have arrived in the 1700s, mainly of French, German, and Scots-Irish descent. The French settlers arrived from nearby Ste. Genevieve, while the German and Scots-Irish pioneers came from the east, in search of fertile land for farming. The county saw rural settlements develop gradually before the Civil War, with the population centers situated mainly around water sources.

The 19th century saw the growth of various industries in Reynolds County, with mining being among the most significant. The county has a long-standing history of iron ore extraction, and by the early 20th century, the mining industry was booming. In its heyday, Reynolds County was home to several iron and lead mines, including the famous Barney Lead Mine, which was majorly responsible for the economic development of the county.

A fun fact about Reynolds County is that it is home to the Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park, a unique geological wonder featuring natural water slides formed over thousands of years. These shut-ins, created by the Black River flowing through ancient volcanic rock, offer visitors a chance to experience a thrilling water playground amidst beautiful natural surroundings. Whatever the season, the park provides recreational opportunities such as hiking, horseback riding, and bird watching, along with spectacular views of the surrounding St. Francois Mountains.
