Saint Charles County is located in the eastern part of the state of Missouri, originally inhabited by Native American tribes like the Mississippian Mound Builders and later the Illini and Missouri Tribes. Established on October 1, 1812, Saint Charles County derived its name from Saint Charles Borromeo, an Italian Cardinal, and from King Charles III of Spain. The county was one of the first five districts in the Missouri Territory and played a significant role in Missouri's early history.

In 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition began its journey up the Missouri River from Saint Charles, and this county also served as Missouri's first state capital from 1821 to 1826. The historic city of Saint Charles served as the last "civilized" stop for settlers heading westward during the settlement of the American West. The county experienced significant growth during the mid-19th century due to its prime location along the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers and later by railroad expansion.

During the 20th century, Saint Charles County evolved into a suburban area, with its population surging in the latter half of the century, making it one of the fastest-growing counties in Missouri. In the 21st century, the county has maintained its status as an important historical, cultural, and economic region in the state.

Fun fact: Saint Charles County is home to the First Missouri State Capitol Historic Site, which served as the meeting place for the state's first legislators from 1821 to 1826, before the state capital was moved to Jefferson City. The picturesque historic Main Street in downtown Saint Charles has a rich, 200-year history and features over 125 unique shops and restaurants, showcasing its charm and importance as a historic landmark in Missouri.
