Saint Louis County is a county located in the northeastern part of the state of Missouri, with its county seat in the city of Clayton. Established on October 1, 1812, it is the oldest and most populous county in Missouri, and it is part of the larger Saint Louis metropolitan area.

The area now known as Saint Louis County was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Missouri and Illinois people. Eventually, European settlers, primarily French and Spanish, began to arrive in the late 1600s and early 1700s. The French originally named the region "Les Petites COtes," meaning "The Little Hills."

In 1803, the United States acquired the region through the Louisiana Purchase, and by 1804, the city of Saint Louis was founded. During the 19th century, the area saw significant growth and development driven by trade routes, industry, and the westward expansion of the United States.

In the 20th century, Saint Louis County continued to grow, with new suburbs and neighborhoods developing around the city. Today, the county has a diverse population with a mix of urban and suburban communities.

Fun Fact: One notable attraction in Saint Louis County is the Gateway Arch, which stands 630 feet tall and is the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere. The arch symbolizes the city's role as the "Gateway to the West" during the westward expansion of the United States in the 19th century.
