Shannon County, situated in the Ozark Mountains in the southern part of Missouri, holds a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Named after George F. "Peg-Leg" Shannon, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the county was officially established on January 29, 1841. Initially, it was a part of Ripley County, but because of population growth and the difficulty for residents to access their county seat, Shannon County was formed.

The economy in its early years was primarily based on agriculture and timber industries, with a focus on farming, logging, and milling. Later, the development of the railroad in the late 19th century allowed timber to be shipped more easily, leading to a prosperous period of growth for Shannon County.

One of Shannon County's defining natural features is its large number of springs, and it has been called the "Land of a Million Gallons," due to the nearly 1 million gallons of water flowing through its numerous springs every minute. The county has the largest number of first magnitude springs in Missouri, which draws tourists and nature enthusiasts to the region.

A fun fact about Shannon County is that it is home to the Alley Spring Roller Mill, a historic site that operated from 1894 to 1924. This preserved roller mill boasts a red paint job, making it a picturesque landmark set against the natural beauty of Alley Spring. Today, the Alley Spring Roller Mill operates as a museum, providing a glimpse into the region's history and industry.
