Broadwater County, located in the great state of Montana, has a rich history that dates back to the early settlement and growth of the American West. Established on January 7, 1897, the county was named in honor of Charles Arthur Broadwater, a prominent Montana pioneer, businessman, and politician.

The history of Broadwater County is marked by the discovery of gold in 1864 in Confederate Gulch, which led to an influx of settlers and miners to the area. The settlement of Canton, now submerged underwater, sprang up as a result of the gold rush and became an essential location for transportation between Helena and the Gulch mining camp. The region also saw the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the 1880s, further bolstering its economy and population.

The county seat, Townsend, was established in 1883 and named after the wife of Charles Arthur Broadwater. The location was strategically chosen as a loading station for the Northern Pacific Railroad with easy access to the gulch mining area.

The area is known for its abundant outdoor recreational opportunities, showcasing its varied terrain from the Missouri River, which borders the northern edge of the county, to the Big Belt and Elkhorn Mountains. Recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking, and water-based exploits are popular among locals and tourists.

Fun Fact: Every summer, Broadwater County hosts its annual "Broadwater County Rodeo," also known as the "Last Chance Stampede." This iconic event, held in Townsend, attracts participants and spectators from all over Montana and beyond, showcasing the area's deep-rooted cowboy and ranching culture.
