Flathead County, the great jewel of Montana, was established on February 6, 1893. Located in the northwestern part of the state, it encompasses nearly 5,256 square miles of diverse terrain, ranging from the majestic Rocky Mountains to lush valleys and pristine lakes. The county is named after the Flathead Native American tribe, who were among the first inhabitants of this region.

The area was explored in the early 19th century by European trappers and traders, such as David Thompson, who fostered relationships with the local tribes. Later in the century, the U.S. Army established Fort Owen trading post near present-day Missoula. As white settlement expanded, the Flathead tribe entered into several treaties with the United States, culminating in the creation of the Flathead Indian Reservation in 1855.

Flathead County, with a population of around 103,000 people, has flourished thanks to its abundant natural resources and outdoor recreation opportunities. It is home to the west entrance of Glacier National Park, one of the country's most beautiful and popular parks, which boasts over 1 million acres of protected wilderness. The county's largest city, Kalispell, serves as the commercial and cultural hub of the region.

A fun fact about Flathead County is that it is home to Flathead Lake, which is the largest natural freshwater lake by surface area in the western United States, spanning a total of 191.5 square miles. This lake is famous for its crystal-clear waters, which can provide visibility up to 35 feet deep, offering breathtaking views of the underwater world for scuba divers and snorkelers. Furthermore, the lake is home to the unique Flathead Lake Monster, a mythical creature akin to the Loch Ness Monster, with legends and sightings dating back over a century.
