McCone County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Montana. Established on February 20, 1919, it was named in honor of George McCone, a state senator and early settler of the region. The county has its administrative seat in Circle, the only incorporated town in the area.

McCone County's historical roots can be traced back to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which passed through the area in 1805. The region was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Sioux, Assiniboine, and Gros Ventre, before European settlers and fur trappers arrived.

Agriculture and the cattle industry fueled the county's growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with many homesteaders moving to the area. The construction of the Milwaukee Railroad further spurred development, connecting the county to the rest of the country.

The Fort Peck Dam, a major infrastructure project built in 1933-1940, lies partially within McCone County. As one of the largest earth-filled dams in the world, it became an important source of employment during the Great Depression and remains a significant feature of the county today, attracting thousands of tourists annually.

Fun Fact: A unique geological feature of McCone County is the Hell Creek Formation, a series of sedimentary rock formations famous for the numerous fossils discovered dating back to the Late Cretaceous period.
