Bladen County, located in the southeastern part of North Carolina, was formed in 1734 as part of Bath County. Originally, it was a vast territory that encompassed all or parts of 55 present-day North Carolina counties - this earned it the nickname "Mother of Counties." It was named in honor of Martin Bladen, a British Member of Parliament and Commissioner of Trade and Plantations.

The early inhabitants of the region were primarily Native American tribes such as the Saponi, Waccamaw, and Cape Fear Indians. European settlers, including English, Irish, and Scottish immigrants, arrived in the early 18th century and established the growth of the agricultural sector in the area, primarily focusing on tobacco, cotton, and corn.

The county played a role in the American Revolutionary War, as well. The Battle of Elizabethtown, a minor conflict between the local Patriot forces and Loyalists, took place in 1781 in present-day Bladen County. The Patriots were successful in the battle, and it is considered a significant event in regaining control of the region.

A fun fact about Bladen County is that it is home to the oldest active church in North Carolina, Brown Marsh Presbyterian Church, which was founded in 1756. Also, Jones Lake State Park, one of the few Carolina Bay lakes in the world, is located in the county, offering unique recreation opportunities and a fascinating ecosystem for visitors to explore.
