Craven County is situated in the eastern region of the great state of North Carolina and was established in 1705. It was named in honor of William, Earl of Craven, who was one of the original lords proprietors of the Carolinas, the English entrepreneurs who were granted the land of the two Carolinas by King Charles II in the late 1660s. Covering approximately 774 square miles, Craven County played an essential role in the development of North Carolina.

New Bern, the county seat of Craven County, was founded by Swiss and Palatine German immigrants in 1710, making it the second oldest city in North Carolina. It was the first permanent capital of the Province of North Carolina from 1747 to 1789, and remained an important trading and political center for the state. New Bern also served as the capital of the short-lived State of Franklin, an autonomous, unrecognized state that was formed in the area now known as eastern Tennessee.

During the American Revolutionary War, the county was the site of numerous conflicts and had an important strategic position. Several historic sites in Craven County, such as the Tryon Palace, have been preserved and serve as reminders of the county's role in American history.

Craven County is also home to the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, one of the largest marine air stations in the world, which provides an important economic and cultural contribution to the region.

Fun Fact: New Bern, the county seat of Craven County, is the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola. In 1898, pharmacist Caleb Bradham invented the soft drink in his pharmacy, which later evolved into the world-famous brand that we know today. Visitors can still stop at the original site, now known as the Birthplace of Pepsi Store, to learn more about the drink's history and enjoy a refreshing soda.
