Hertford County is located in the northeastern region of the great state of North Carolina. The county was officially established in 1759 and was named in honor of Francis Seymour-Conway, the Earl of Hertford and a distinguished British statesman. It is believed that the county's name may have also been influenced by Hertfordshire, a county in England.

This region of North Carolina has a rich history that dates back to Native American settlements, specifically the Meherrin tribe, who lived near the Chowan River. During colonial times, this area developed around agriculture, with tobacco, cotton, and peanuts becoming major cash crops. In the early 19th-century, the Roanoke-Chowan River was a significant transportation system for transporting goods, boosting the economy in Hertford County.

One of the outstanding historical events of Hertford County is the origin of the Ahoskie Light Infantry. In April 1861, a meeting was held at the historic Robert Peele House to discuss the formation of a military company to fight in the Civil War. By May, the Ahoskie Light Infantry was officially formed, and men from the town of Ahoskie and its surrounding areas comprised the company.
