During the colonial era, Wilmington emerged as an important port city, with agricultural produce and naval stores becoming its primary exports. The area was also significant during the American Revolutionary War. In 1781, the Battle of Guilford Courthouse occurred not far from New Hanover County, leading to the eventual American victory in the south.

The Civil War brought further attention to New Hanover County, as Wilmington became a crucial supply center for the Confederate army. The city was the last major Southern port to fall to Union forces in 1865.
