Scotland County, North Carolina, is located in the southeastern part of the state and was established on February 20, 1899. It was formed from portions of Richmond and Robeson counties due to the efforts of State Representative John Charles McNeill. The county is named after Scotland, the ancestral homeland for many residents in the area during the 18th and 19th centuries. Laurinburg serves as the county seat, which is named in honor of James Laurin, who was an early postmaster in the region.

Throughout its history, Scotland County has witnessed growth with the establishment of industries like textiles, railroads, and farming. Tobacco and cotton became major cash crops in the region.

A fun fact about Scotland County is that it is home to one of the earliest public golf courses in North Carolina known as The Scotch Meadows Country Club. The club was founded in 1928, and its golf course was designed by renowned golf course architect Donald Ross. The Scotch Meadows is an 18-hole course with lush Bermuda grass fairways, challenging tee boxes, and picturesque views of the natural landscape.
