Tyrrell County, located in the great state of North Carolina, was established on March 9th, 1729, by the North Carolina General Assembly, making it one of the earliest counties in the state. It was named after Sir John Tyrrell, who served as one of the eight Lord's Proprietors who ruled the Province of Carolina.

Tyrrell County is situated in the Coastal Plain region, covering an area of about 594 square miles, with approximately 38 square miles being water. Its county seat and only municipality is the town of Columbia. The area was inhabited by Native Americans before European settlers arrived in the late 17th century. The first permanent settlement in the county was established around 1690, and the local economy relied predominantly on agriculture, fishing, and timber harvesting.

Tyrrell County played a part in the Revolutionary War, where local residents, known as Culpepper's Rebellion, participated in the resistance against the British government. In the 19th century, the county's remoteness meant that it was not heavily involved in the Civil War. However, a few naval skirmishes took place in nearby Albemarle Sound.

One fun fact about Tyrrell County is that it is home to the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, which is a pristine wilderness area with diverse ecosystems, including pocosins (forested wetlands) and marshes, providing a habitat for diverse species of migratory birds and other wildlife. Pocosin Lakes is also one of the reintroduction sites for the endangered red wolf, which has been successfully reintroduced into the area as a part of conservation efforts.
