Vance County is located in the north-central part of the state of North Carolina. It was established in 1881 and named after Zebulon Baird Vance, a popular governor of North Carolina during the Civil War and Reconstruction period. The county was formed from portions of Granville, Franklin, and Warren Counties to economically strengthen the area.

The county seat and largest city is Henderson, which was founded in 1841 and named after Leonard Henderson, a former North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice. The city became a crucial trading center and hub for the tobacco industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily because of the opening of the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad. Its strategic location made it an essential city for commerce and transportation.

A fun fact about Vance County is that it is home to the annual "Show, Shine, Shag & Dine" event, which is an antique car show held in Henderson that promotes tourism and celebrates North Carolina's rich automotive heritage. The event usually takes place in October and attracts classic car enthusiasts from all over the country.
