Billings County, situated in the western region of North Dakota, was established on January 04, 1879. However, it was officially organized much later on May 22, 1886. The county was named after Frederick H. Billings, who was the president of the Northern Pacific Railroad-a major force in the settlement and development of the region.

Originally, the county seat was set at Medora, which at around the same time, was gaining popularity as a ranching town, thanks in part to Marquis de Mores, a French Entrepreneur. Another prominent early settler was Theodore Roosevelt, who would later become the 26th President of the United States. He arrived in 1883 and invested in cattle ranching in the area, which ultimately inspired his passion for conservation.

Stretching over 1,153 square miles, Billings County today is known for its oil and natural gas resources, ranching, and, of course, its natural beauty. One fun fact about Billings County is that it is home to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Established in 1947, this park is dedicated to preserving the beautiful landscape that inspired Roosevelt's love for environmental conservation and is a major tourist attraction of the county.
