Burleigh County, located in the great state of North Dakota, was created on January 4, 1873, and named in honor of Walter A. Burleigh, a prominent physician, and later, a delegate to the U.S. Congress representing the Dakota Territory. The county comprises a total area of 1,668 square miles, with Bismarck, the state capital, serving as its county seat.

In its early years, the region was inhabited by Native American tribes, particularly the Mandan and Hidatsa peoples. European-American settlers arrived in the second half of the 19th century, drawn by the fertile land and the expansion of the Northern Pacific Railway. The railroad connected Bismarck to major cities in the US, fostering the growth of the county's population.

The county's economy has historically relied upon agriculture, particularly the cultivation of cereals such as wheat, barley, and oats. However, other industries, such as energy production, services, and manufacturing, have also contributed to the region's growth over the years.

As for a fun fact, Burleigh County was home to Bismarck's Camp Hancock, which was originally built in 1872 to provide logistical support for the expansion of the Northern Pacific Railway. What's interesting is that Camp Hancock's historic site still stands today and includes a vintage railway passenger car, a 1909 church, and a museum exhibiting the county's rich history. Visitors can explore these relics of the past, showcasing the county's central role in the development of North Dakota.
