Dickey County is located in the southeastern part of the state of North Dakota, and was established on March 5, 1881, by the Dakota Territory legislature. It was named in honor of George H. Dickey, a lawyer, judge, and territorial legislator. The county seat was initially located in Ellendale, a city that was founded the same year the county was established. Settlers in the area were predominantly engaged in agriculture, due to the fertile soil and favorable conditions for farming.

Dickey County's population expanded significantly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fueled by an influx of European immigrants, primarily of German, Norwegian, and Swedish descent. The construction of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railway also played a major role in promoting growth and development. The extensive rail network connected the major towns in the county to the surrounding region, facilitating trade and transport of agricultural products.

The county has a rich agricultural history, with corn, soybeans, and wheat being the major crops grown in the area. In addition to farming, the local economy has been supported by ranching and small businesses.

One fun fact about Dickey County is that it hosts the annual Dickey County Fair, which has been held every summer in the city of Oakes since the early 1900s. The fair highlights the county's agricultural traditions, and features various events such as livestock shows, a parade, a demolition derby, and live music, attracting people from all over the region for family entertainment and community spirit.
