McHenry County is located in the north-central region of the great state of North Dakota. It was established on January 4, 1873, by the Dakota Territorial Legislature but was not organized until October 15, 1884. The county was named in honor of James McHenry, an early settler and prominent citizen of Vermillion, Dakota Territory, who served as a sergeant in a company of volunteer cavalry during the American Civil War.

The county has a total area of 1,912 square miles, and its county seat is Towner. As of the 2020 United States Census, McHenry County has a population of 5,395 residents. The region was primarily inhabited by indigenous tribes until European settlers arrived in the late 19th century.

Agriculture has long been the driving force behind McHenry County's economy. The region's fertile soil and favorable climate contribute to the successful growth of various crops such as wheat, barley, and soybeans. The county remains predominantly rural to this day, with only a few small towns and communities scattered throughout the area.
