.McIntosh County, located within the great state of North Dakota, was established on March 9, 1883, by the territorial legislature. The county was named in honor of Edward H. McIntosh, a member of the territorial legislature during that period. It is positioned in the southeastern part of North Dakota, with its county seat in Ashley.
The area's earliest inhabitants were Native American tribes, including the Sioux, Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara. As European settlers arrived in the mid-19th century, the land became predominantly agricultural, with many German-Russian and German-Hungarian immigrants establishing small farms.
In 1900, the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad extended its tracks to the region, connecting McIntosh County to major markets and boosting the local economy. Despite facing hardships during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, the county persevered and remained a predominantly agricultural community.
