Steele County, located in the great state of North Dakota, was founded on June 2, 1883, and named after Edward H. Steele, a prominent local businessman, and politician. The county was originally part of Griggs and Traill Counties but was later organized separately. The county seat is in Finley, which was founded in 1897 and named after a Northern Pacific Railroad official.

Steele County, covering an area of 715 square miles, is situated in the eastern part of North Dakota, and renowned for its fertile farmland. Agriculture has been the primary industry for the county since its early days, with wheat, corn, soybeans, and barley being the main crops. Over the years, livestock farming has also become predominant in the area.

As for transportation, the Northern Pacific Railroad played a significant role in Steele County's development, expanding economic opportunities and encouraging settlement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

One interesting fact about Steele County is that it is home to the world's largest sandhill crane - a unique statue that stands at 40 feet tall in the city of Steele, North Dakota. This giant crane, named "Sandy", was created to celebrate and protect the migratory path of sandhill cranes in the area and is now a popular roadside attraction for tourists and locals alike.
