Walsh County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of North Dakota. It was created on August 30, 1881, from the northern territories of Grand Forks County and named after George H. Walsh, a newspaperman and politician. The county seat is located in Grafton, which also happens to be the largest city within the county. Walsh County covers an area of about 1,294 square miles and, according to the 2020 census, has a population of around 10,610.

The region was initially settled by Europeans in the late 19th century, mainly by people of Norwegian, Polish, and French-Canadian descent. The rich soil and flat terrain lent itself to farming and agriculture, which became the backbone of the local economy. Walsh County's productive lands became known for growing wheat, barley, and potatoes, as well as raising livestock.

A fun fact about Walsh County is that it is home to the Icelandic State Park, located by Lake Renwick. The park was established in 1964 to preserve the region's natural beauty and to honor the Icelandic pioneers who first settled in the Pembina River area during the late 1800s. The park offers various recreational activities such as camping, swimming, and fishing, along with the opportunity to explore pioneer-era buildings and artifacts in the Pioneer Heritage Center and the Gunlogson Homestead and Nature Preserve.
