Cheyenne County is located in the western part of the great state of Nebraska, USA. First established in 1867, the county was named after the Cheyenne Native American tribe, who once inhabited the region. The land area of Cheyenne County is approximately 1,196 square miles, which comprises mainly agricultural land.

One of the most notable events in Cheyenne County's history was the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad in the late 1860s, which spurred the growth and development of this agricultural region. Sidney, the county seat, was established in 1867 as a direct result of the railroad's expansion. In addition to its importance as a logistics hub and a western terminus for the Pony Express, Sidney became a supply center for the construction of the nearby Transcontinental Railroad.

In the early 1900s, Cheyenne County experienced rapid agricultural expansion and population growth as local farmers began planting wheat, corn, and trading cattle. Other principal industries in the region include mining, with nearby Baker and Delores mines extracting zinc, copper, and marble for a time.

Fun Fact: Cheyenne County was one of the counties bisected by the 100th meridian, an imaginary line that played a significant role in setting the course for the Homestead Act of 1862. This line was commonly referred to as "the line of no return," as lands lying to the west were perceived as too arid for farming. This myth was dispelled over time as farmers learned how to use the land to their advantage, and Cheyenne County ultimately became known for its agricultural production.
