Douglas County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Nebraska, USA. The county was established in 1854, a few years before Nebraska officially became a state in 1867. It was named after Stephen A. Douglas, a prominent Illinois politician who played a significant role in the creation of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which led to the establishment of the Nebraska Territory.

The largest city in Douglas County is Omaha, which is also the county seat. Omaha was founded in 1854 by land speculators who saw the potential for a transportation hub in the area, as it was situated along the Missouri River. The formation of the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1863 brought more settlers and rapid growth to the area. Omaha served as a crucial transportation hub due to its river connections and the nearby presence of the great westward railroad expansion.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Douglas County experienced significant population growth, driven partly by the industrialization of Omaha and the development of its stockyards and meatpacking industry. Between 1890 and 1920, Omaha's population more than quadrupled.

Today, Douglas County is the most populous county in Nebraska, with an estimated population of over 572,000 residents. The county is a significant center for business, providing employment opportunities in various sectors such as finance, insurance, and telecommunications.

Fun Fact: The world-famous investor Warren Buffett, often referred to as the "Oracle of Omaha," was born and currently resides in Douglas County, specifically in the city of Omaha. His multinational conglomerate, Berkshire Hathaway, is also headquartered in the county.
