Dundy County is a picturesque region located in the southwestern part of the great state of Nebraska. Officially established on March 31, 1873, it was named in honor of Elmer Scipio Dundy, a Nebraska Supreme Court judge. Dundy County covers an area of 921 square miles and is primarily an agricultural community. The vibrant county seat, Benkelman, was named after its founder, Benjamin Franklin Benkelman, a native of Michigan.

The region carries a rich history dating back to the prehistoric period. It was originally home to various Native American tribes, while European settlers started arriving in the late 1800s, attracted by the Homestead Act.

One of Dundy County's most famous landmarks is the Massacre Canyon, site of the last major battle between the Pawnee and Sioux tribes on August 5, 1873. This battle resulted in the deaths of numerous Pawnee tribesmen in what is known as the "Massacre Canyon battle."

A fun fact about Dundy County is that it's home to the Rock Creek Station State Historical Park, located on the Oregon-California Trail. This park and wildlife management area allow visitors to experience living-history demonstrations and witness preserved wagon ruts left by the pioneers in the 19th century.
