Seward County, located in the great state of Nebraska, was established on January 15, 1856 as part of the Nebraska Territory. The county was named in honor of William H. Seward, an influential American politician and prominent member of the Whig Party who later served as Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.

The county covers an area of about 575 square miles and is home to several towns and cities, including the largest community and county seat, Seward. Early settlers in the region were primarily engaged in farming and agriculture, with the fertile lands and ample rainfall providing ideal conditions for crop production. These settlers were primarily of German, Czech, and Norwegian descent.

Seward County played a role in the westward expansion of the United States, as it was situated along the Ox-Bow Trail, an important route used by pioneers heading west during the mid-1800s. This later evolved into the Lincoln Highway, a transcontinental route linking New York and San Francisco that traversed Nebraska in the early 20th century. Today, the county remains primarily agricultural, with a focus on dairy and crop farming.

A fun fact about Seward County is that it is home to the "Fourth of July City" - the city of Seward. This small city has earned its famous nickname by celebrating American Independence Day on a grand scale every year since 1868. The annual Fourth of July celebration in Seward is renowned for being one of the largest and oldest in the nation, drawing thousands of visitors from across the state and beyond.
